Voting with Blockchain: Business as Usual?

Blockchain presents a case for heightened transparency and accountability in voting processes around the world but it does not necessarily guarantee that the subjectivity of voters and administrators of voting processes will not compromise the efficacy of votes administered via blockchain.

A world where electoral fraud is eradicated by the use of blockchain technology is indeed a fruitful notion but also a fallacy at best. Yes, blockchain infrastructure may make each vote immutable. Yes, blockchain infrastructure may create greater confidence in proxy voters in the boardroom. . Yes,  blockchain may make elections less prone to hacking scandals but as a good car does not guarantee a good driver, neither does an incredible technology such as blockchain guarantee that the human aspects of blockchain will not cause equally and if not worse events to voting processes than those carried out by rogue politicians in the past.

It is important to consider the effects which machine learning and artificial intelligence may have on the efficacy of voting processes supported by blockchain technology. The intersection of these three spheres of technologies could provide greater depth to the reliability of blockchain as a foundation of voting processes.

The world needs truth. The world yearns for truth. Whether or not we can handle it remains a question ultimately unanswered. The death of truth, however, is the beginning of an illusion. A painful, myopic illusion. The direction that policymakers choose to take with the use of blockchain in electoral processes remains unclear. The direction that the electorate will pressure governments to take also remains unclear. Technology won't change us. It will reveal who we really are.

An interview with the CEO of blockchain voting solutions provider,  Secure Vote, shed a lot of light on the intricacies of blockchain voting. Blockchain technology not only allows for the application of anonymous voting but cheaper and faster voting. Blockchain voting allows for secret ballots that not even facilitators can undermine if they aimed to. Additionally, it may be a significant solution to the crypto space where a strong need for governance systems exist, particularly in token sales and the projects supported by token sales.

Blockchain technology presents a case for reduced risks of violence at polling stations in volatile political climates. With the option of voting from a phone from the safety of one’s home , an individual may not have to be exposed to the physical threats from political influencers that are usually present at polling stations in hostile political climates.

The question remains how will blockchain voting systems be implemented in such nations. There is a likelihood that pressure from the populace will be the source of influence in this respect. There is a possibility that some nations may implement hybrid voting schemes (for voters to vote in person or online). Hybrid voting schemes allow for gradual transition to a purely blockchain based voting system. On the other hand, a voting system based solely on blockchain technology may not always be necessary due to the fact that the advantages of conventional voting systems and blockchain voting systems may be merged.

To varying degrees, conventional systems of voting are antiquated. The efficiency, savings, and voting participation presented by blockchain technology voting could cause significant ripples in the world of voting as we know it. It is important to consider the blow to voter confidence that scandals in the sphere of voting have caused.

Consideration of the inception of Secure Vote may provide insight on a shared vision for blockchain voting that empowers the change necessary for a new era of blockchain use in politics and company governance. Prior to the creation of Secure Vote, Flux was established to create issue based direct democracy which required an infrastructure that allowed millions of people to vote fast, anonymously, safely, importantly , and cheaply. The idea was to ensure that everyone may be able to vote on legislations in parliament , become delegates or delegate their votes to others, and abstain from votes if needed. The support of mass scale voting on a dynamic platform opens possibilities that could shift the dynamics of power in economies.
